Part 3: 2016 Bible Reading Challenge

“If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century.

Last Friday Carl and I went to the funeral of a dear friend Tim Boeglin. Tim was a pastor of churches along with us, and his wife Suzi is a joy to be around serving the Lord in her own way. They were an amazing couple who loved many of the same things, and yet, were able to challenge and surprise each other.

Tim was “a man of rare intellect.” He was an avid reader of all kinds of writings. The family joke was who was his second love: his wife Suzi or his books. Of course, Suzi always won out, but sliding real close to her were Tim’s books.

However, Tim’s first love was his love for the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Scriptures. This week the 2016 Bible Reading Challenge is “In Memory” of our friend Tim Boeglin who led many to Christ through Scripture. This is for you, Tim, rest in peace!

Persistence Helps You To Meet Your Goals

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
Jorge Luis Borges is an Argentine short-story writer, essayist,
poet and translator, and a key figure in Spanish-literature.

When I started my blog (lfreetoblog.com) almost two years ago, I had no idea how much fun, or how many struggles I would face to write something meaningful each week. At first I wanted to blog twice a week. That did not happen: not enough experience. At first I wrote about myself: after a couple of months I got bored with that. Then I took a couple of months off: starting over again which is not usual for beginner bloggers. (I know one person who started over 7 times.)  It has been an amazing journey.

When I first started my blog I was taking an online writing course called Tribe Writers by Jeff Goins. Jeff said that if you are going to be a writer, you must 1) “call yourself a writer, and 2) put yourself out there.” In other words, I had to call myself a writer and then start publishing something in public. Like all new writers, my first thoughts were that I was a fraud. How could I call myself a writer when I had not written anything.

Of course my first question was: What if someone asks me what I have had published? My next question was: How can you be a writer without publishing anything. Then I began to think about all the newsletters I have written — each one new from beginning to end. How about all those research papers in college as I worked on my Batchelor’s and Master’s degrees? How about all the projects people have asked me to “Proofread and Edit?” You do not have to PUBLISH A BOOK to be a writer. It takes a lot of pressure off when you know you are a writer even though you have not published a book. And practice has to count for something! Right??!!

In my first blog I had set four goals: 1) to complete the TribeWriters online class with Jeff Goins (I am now taking his second online class.). 2) to deal with my procrastination (This one has been with me all my life. However, I am finding there are moments where I push back on my procrastination and tell it to visit me another day — which it does.). 3) to develop a Platform — in other words, put myself out there (I continue to blog every week with a few hiccups now and then, as well as writing for other publications). 4) I want to see if I could do it! (With persistence and patience I am doing it. And loving ALL MOST every minute of it.).

Persistence and patience will help you to accomplish your goals. No matter if they are big or small. Decide what you are going to do, break your goal down into smaller pieces, break down even further if you need to, and do it! Complete each step that is set before you. You will amaze yourself when your goal is reached and you have succeeded. Two thumbs up for persistence!!
